From Foothills to Tokyo: CFSD Alum Commands the Global Stage

Posted Date: 06/23/26 (05:00 PM)

The lights of Tokyo’s prestigious Oji Hall shined brightly. Standing in the wings, Foothills grad Antonio Padilla (‘24) took a deep breath. With quiet confidence, Antonio walked out onto the stage to lead the renowned Tokyo Sinfonia. He faced the audience, took a bow, and turned toward the ensemble of world-class string musicians.

He lifted his baton. Total silence filled the grand room.

Then, in a single, sudden motion, his baton cut through the air. A wave of violins filled the heart of Japan with a melody born from years of hard work back home in Tucson.

A Global Honor for a Local Talent

Local music director, Toru Tagawa, saw immense potential in the young conductor and encouraged him to apply for the exclusive international conducting showcase led by Maestro Robert Ryker in Ginza, Tokyo. The competition was fierce. Of 41 applicants, Antonio was selected as one of five conductors from around the world to be chosen for the 10-day workshop. It was an incredible accomplishment just being selected, but then Antonio went on to fundraise in the community to pay for the journey.

Showing the true spirit of a CFHS Falcon, Antonio turned to his community. Leveraging his strong connections across the Tucson music scene, he successfully fundraised enough money to pay for journey.

Bringing Italian Masterpieces to Japan

Once in Tokyo, Antonio threw himself into intense musical preparation. His assignment was conducting Ottorino Respighi’s Rossiniana Suite, specially arranged for string orchestra by Maestro Ryker.

The experience left an unforgettable impression on the young graduate.

"One of my favorite moments had to have been the concert day, getting to dress in a tailcoat tuxedo for the first time and performing with a group of amazing string players, in a beautiful music hall right in the center of Tokyo," Antonio shared. "Outside of the musical experiences, though, exploring the diversity of different districts in Tokyo left room for so much adventure and fun that made it even more worth it."

Where It All Began: The Power of Mentorship

Antonio's dream of commanding the podium began years ago in Esperero Canyon Middle School’s band room. He credits his early inspiration to his band teacher, Mr. Walavich.

"Mr. Walavich was my band teacher in middle school and was actually the person who helped me realize I wanted to be a conductor and work with young musicians," Antonio reflected. "I had even created my own small ensemble that I would conduct while I was one of his students."

In a heartwarming twist of fate, Mr. Walavich was actually able to witness his former student's global debut. The middle school teacher typically travels over the summer. He happened to be nearby in Thailand, allowing him to make the journey to Tokyo, cheer Antonio on from the audience, and photograph the event.

Antonio’s story is a proud reminder for all CFHS families of where dedication, community support, and great mentorship can take our students. The world-class skills, discipline, and vision they develop along the way allow our students to take their talents anywhere—from Tucson to the bright lights of Tokyo. The future of music is in excellent hands! 🎶
