Curriculum Revision and Adoption Process

Through collaborative efforts with educators and administrators, the Catalina Foothills School District (CFSD) renews and/or designs its K-12 curriculum standards and programs on a rotating basis. CFSD standards are articulated from kindergarten through high school and align with Arizona's Academic Standards and related national standards. A formal and comprehensive process is used to design system-wide K-12 educational programming that enables all students to learn at challenging levels and develop into 21st century globally competitive students. We strive to offer high quality curriculum resources that support evidence-based instructional practices in our classrooms. All standards and programs are approved by the governing board.

On January 8, 2019, the governing board adopted standards and indicators for the K-12 counseling program. The ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success: K-12 College- and Career-Readiness Standards for Every Student, describe the knowledge, skills, and attitudes students need to achieve academic success, college and career readiness, and social/emotional development. The CFSD school counseling program is based on the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model.

Currently under review is the K-12 science program and related performance standards. A team of educators at the elementary, middle, and high school levels are working collaboratively to determine CFSD's future science program and  grade level standards. The revision process is expected to continue into the 2020-2021 school year; however, the grade level standards are expected to be presented to the governing board for consideration of approval in the spring of 2020.

Proposed revisions to the Grade 9 Human Growth and Development curriculum have been presented to the governing board for consideration. The current curriculum was approved on June 9, 2015. Two public meetings are scheduled at the November 12 and November 25 board meetings to consider the revisions. These meetings are being held prior to the December 10, 2019 board meeting, the meeting in which the board will consider approval of the proposed changes. The proposed changes and related materials can be reviewed at the CFSD district office, 2101 E. River Road, Tucson, AZ, 85718.

Board approved standards for new programs and courses can be found in the Academics menu on the home page of this website. Select elementary, middle, and/or high school. CFSD does not offer a distance learning program.

60 Day Public Review of Instructional Materials

Textbooks and supplementary materials/resources are evaluated and adopted during a curriculum revision process or the development of a new course or program. Additional supplementary resources are considered on an annual basis. A 60-day preview period provides an opportunity for the community to review proposed curriculum resources before the governing board formally adopts them for implementation. Administrators and teachers will ensure that parents have adequate access to information about curriculum and instruction in their schools.
