We have a long tradition of outstanding students and staff. Here are the district's previous outstanding achievements.
3-9-21 Outstanding Achievements:
CFHS musicians selected for the 2021 AMEA Regional Honor Band. This is the largest number from any high school in the state; CFHS vocalists were selected for the 2021 AMEA Regional Honor Choir; CFHS student was selected as one of two students representing the state of Arizona at the 2021 U.S. Senate Youth Program; Three (3) CFSD Community Schools’ FIRST Lego League (FLL) teams won top awards at a recent Tucson regional tournament; Community Schools Math League enrichment club members earned 1st places in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade groups in the Math League competition, the 6th qualifying round for Arizona; CFHS senior has been nominated as a U.S. Presidential Scholar.
2-9-21 Outstanding Achievements:
CFSD Foundation has named its 2021 Teachers of the Year; CFHS FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) team, Pioneer 327, is headed to state competition based on their successful showing at the January Palo Verde Invitational; CFHS senior was named to the Arizona All-State Jazz Band for the 3rd consecutive year; CFHS SciOly Blue and Silver teams placed in the top three for 15 of the 16 events, with 9 first-place finishes; CFHS speech & debate team competed recently in the Wildcat Cup; CFHS senior is among the 35 Arizona high school seniors who have been named finalists for the Flinn Scholarship; CFHS Studio Art students won Gold and Silver at the Southwest Region of the National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.
1-12-21 Outstanding Achievements:
CFHS Science Olympiad team placed 2nd at the AMS Invitational in November; CFHS technical theatre teacher was chosen as the recipient of the 2020 Arizona Thespians Teacher of the Year Award for the South Region; CFHS senior has been named a semifinalist for the 2021 class of the Coca-Cola Scholars Program; CFHS speech & debate team competed in the Arizona State HDSHC Invitational in January.
12-8-20 Outstanding Achievements:
Seven (7) CFHS seniors signed national letters of intent for athletics; CFHS Girls Cross Country Team is Arizona's Division II State Champions; CFHS Boys Cross Country athletes garnered several awards; Three (3) CFHS students placed at the Mountain View Speech and Debate Tournament held on November 14. Mountain View is a qualifier for the Tournament of Champions.
CFHS Girls Golf Team qualified for the Girls Golf State Championship. They won 3rd place in state championship; CFHS Boys Golf Team qualified for the Boys State Championship; CFHS Girls Cross Country team took 1st Place at sectionals; CFHS Boys Cross Country team took 2nd Place at sectionals; CFHS Swim/Dive team member was State Runner-Up for Division II Dive.
10-13-2020 Outstanding Achievements:
Nine (9) CFHS seniors have been named National Merit Semifinalists; Four (4) CFHS seniors were named National Merit Commended Students; Nine (9) CFHS science students were accepted into the University of Arizona's S.T.A.R. Lab program; Two (2) Orange Grove students were winners in the University of Arizona Poetry Center's K-12 Poetry Contest; Canyon View music teacher has been selected as a quarterfinalist for the Music Educator Award presented by the Recording Academy and GRAMMY Museum; Esperero math teacher, was named CFSD's Legendary Teacher; Congratulations to our teachers who completed CFSD’s Great Beginnings: Systems for Success induction program in June 2020.
8-25-2020 Outstanding Achievements:
The high school's Pioneer 327 Robotics team made and donated 380 face shields for CFSD staff.
Forty-eight CFHS Class of 2020 graduates earned the Arizona Seal of Biliteracy. Congratulations to all.
CFHS senior has been named a 2020 Flinn Scholar; All four of our middle school orchestras, representing both Esperero and Orange Grove, earned an Excellent rating or higher at the Arizona Music Education Association's all-state competition; Manzanita 5th grade teacher has successfully completed the National Geographic Educator Certification program; Six CFHS senior athletes signed their National Letters of Intent last month; Two CFHS Speech and Debate team members are among the 77 Arizona competitors for the National Speech & Debate Association championship ("Nationals"); CFHS sophomore was a gold key recipient winner for the Scholastic Art and Writing awards for 2020; CFHS junior won Best Drawing for her artwork 'Serenity" at the Joel D. Valdez Main Library in Tucson; The Arizona Community Education Association named CFSD Director of Community Schools its Community Educator of the Year; CFHS Sophomore was named this year's "18 under 18" in Junior Achievement; CFHS senior was selected as a finalist for the AIA Scholar Activity/Scholar Athletic Award; CV 2nd grade teacher was honored with the Teacher Excellence Award for May sponsored by Tucson Values Teachers.
All five of our middle school bands, representing both Esperero and Orange Grove, earned a Superior rating or higher at the Arizona Music Education Association's all-state competition; Multiple students won awards at the Southern Arizona Research, Science and Engineering Foundation (SARSEF) 2020 competition; CFHS soccer players named All-Stars by All Sports Tucson: Canyon View is among the 148 schools in the country that won a 2020 Support Music Merit Award (SMMA) from The National Association of Music Merchants.
3-10-20 Outstanding Achievements:
The ECMS 7th grade boys basketball team won a state championship on February 29 and the ECMS 8th grade boys basketball team finished their season, making it to the fourth round in state play; The high school DECA team of 18 students competed in the DECA State Career Development Conference in Phoenix on February 21-23; Both the Esperero and Orange Grove Science Olympiad teams will advance to state championship based on their finishes at the 2020 Southern Regional tournament;
CFHS's marching band won the Paul Grimes Performance Award at the 2020 Tucson Rodeo Parade; CFHS Winterguard won 1st place in their division at the WGAZ Guard Focus Competition on February 29; The high school speech & debate team competed at state with several wins; City Shaders, Orange Grove's FFL team, have been selected to participate in the LEGOLAND Open Invitational in May; The CFHS Pioneer 327 won the Motivate Award for exhibiting outstanding teamwork and sparking enthusiasm for robotics at the FIRST Tech Challenge state championship; The CFHS school girls soccer team advanced to the state championships.
2-11-20 Outstanding Achievements:
Congratulations to all CFSD school spelling bee winners. Two ECMS students advance to the Pima County Spelling Bee; The CFHS Chess Team won the 2020 State Grade Team Championship; Twenty-two (22) high school DECA students won numerous awards at the DECA District 3 Competitions; The CFHS team, Foothills Pioneer Robotics, took 1st Place and the Inspire Award. Two CFSD Community Schools' robotics teams took home top awards at the Arizona FIRST Lego League statewide championship at the Chandler Robotics Tournament. The Purple Paper Eaters, a community robotics team of Esperero and Ventana Vista students won the Research Presentation Award; The high school's 2019 yearbook was chosen to be part of the 2019 Herff Jones Portfolio - The best of Herff Jones; Five CFHS students have been awarded a KEYS internship with the University of Arizona; The CFHS Pomline won a state championship over the weekend. They were named 2020 Varsity Pom (large) State Champs and took 2nd Place in Varsity Jazz; At the Wildcat Cup, the CFHS speech & debate team took home an armful of medals; CFHS theatre arts students won numerous awards at the Southern Arizona Theatre Festival (SAFT).
1-14-20 Outstanding Achievements:
The 2018-2019 high school yearbook won a First Place award from the American Scholastic Press Association; Five members of CFHS Football team were named to the All-Southern Arizona 4A Football All-Stars Teams; The Pioneer 327 robotics team won first place (Inspire Award) at the FIRST Tech Challenge Tournament in Chandler.
12-10-19 Outstanding Achievements:
Canyon View fifth grader was selected by Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction as a member of the first statewide Student Advisory Council; Nine CFHS Speech & Debate members placed in the Finals with a First Place Finish at the Water Tower Tournament. The team also excelled at the Division I Winter Trophy Tournament, held at ASU; The high school's First Teen Challenge team, Pioneer 327, won the Connect Award at the FIRST Tech Challenge regional competition last weekend; CFHS girls Cross Country team placed 2nd in State competition with 3 runners finishing in the top twelve; CFHS Pomline placed 2nd and qualified for USA Nationals in Pom and Jazz at the Regional Qualifier; CFHS Girls Volleyball team member was named to the Tucson Local Media 2019 Girls Volleyball All-Region First Team, Middle Blocker. She was also named to the All-Southern Arizona first team by All Sports Tucson; Six CFHS athletes signed National Letters of Intent for Athletics; CFHS Chess team won the Division IV championship with a perfect match score. The team also placed 2nd in the State Team Championship; Two CFHS Theatre teams competed in the Arizona Thespian Society State Conference, Tech Challenge on November 15-16; First Lego League (FLL) robotics teams competed in the Tucson Regional Robotics Tournament last weekend. Each team presented research on urban sustainability and resilience and proposed innovative ideas for Tucson.
11-12-19 Outstanding Achievements:
The Arizona School Boards Association (ASBA) recently recognized President and Vice President Amy with ASBA’s Master of Boardsmanship Award ; OGMS was recently mentioned in a CITY Center for Collaborative Learning blog about the school’s Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS); The CFHS Band capped off its undefeated season by winning the Nunamaker Award at the U of A Band Day; 16 CFHS student musicians traveled to seven countries (England, France, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Italy, Germany) between June 21 and July 6 as members of the Arizona Ambassadors of Music: Choir; CFHS, ECMS, and CVES choir students auditioned, were selected, and will perform in the American Choral Directors Association State Cantaremos Honor Choirs; CFHS Senior was named to the 2019 American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Scholastic Junior All-America Team as well as winning the Division II Individual Girls Golf State Championship; The CFHS Girls Golf Team took 3rd Place in state competition; CFHS Pomline won the Wild West Classic with three achievements: overall high score, 1st Place jazz, and 1st Place Division II pom; Both CFHS Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams finished in 1st Place at the Rio Rico Rattler Invitational; CFHS Girls Swim and Dive Team earned 1st Place at the TYR High School Classic. The Team had 8 1st Place race finishes; CFHS Junior won the Dive Championship; The Boys Team came in 2nd Place. The girls and boys teams won Top Team Combined Swimming; CFHS Boys Cross Country Team earned 1st Place at the Eye of the Tiger Invitational; The Girls Cross Country Team placed 4th; CFHS Cheer placed 3rd at the Amphi Spirit Cup Cheer competition; The CFHS girls swim team won the state championship; Both the CFHS boys and girls teams finished in 1st Place at the 2019 AIA State Cross Country sectionals; Sunrise Drive 4th graders took 1st Place (intermediate level) in the Chinese Language & Culture Day drama competition.
10/8/19 Outstanding Achievements:
Six Catalina Foothills High School (CFHS) seniors and one early graduate have been named 2020 National Merit Semifinalists; Two CFHS seniors traveled to seven countries (England, France, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Italy, Germany) between June 21 and July 6 as members of the Arizona Ambassadors of Music; The CFHS girls golf team placed third at the Higley Invitational on September 26; Manzanita 5th grade teacher, Julie Michel, was recognized by TVT with its Teacher Excellence Award; CFHS theater teacher was featured as the September Arts Hero by OnMEDIA
9-10-19 Outstanding Achievements:
A Ventana Vista student's artwork was selected in the Tucson Birthday Stamp Design Contest in the 5-8 age group; CFHS Math Teacher was accepted into the 2019 cohort of the Desmos Teaching Fellowship; We have one hundred forty-six (146) 2019 AP Scholars.
8-13-19 Outstanding Achievements:
Rising CFHS sophomore and varsity chess team member served as the Chief Tournament Director of the Southern Arizona Chess Association Ye Olde Pueblo Open; The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting was awarded to CFSD; For the fifth consecutive year, Niche has ranked CFSD as the best school district in Arizona.
6-11-19 Outstanding Achievements: Ventana Vista's Odyssey of the Mind Team took 6th place at the World Finals' competition at Michigan State University; Orange Grove science teacher, was recently honored by Tucson Electric Power with a certificate and gift basket for her success at helping students learn about energy and energy conservation
5-14-19 Outstanding Achievements: Both our high school girls and boys tennis teams won state this past weekend; Five CFHS athletes signed a college Letter of Intent as scholar athletes; CFHS sophomore was selected to play on the Maccabi USA Youth Men's Basketball Team for the 14th Pan American Maccabi Games; Canyon View Teacher was recognized on May 8 with the Teacher Excellence Award;
Teams from Orange Grove Middle School and Catalina Foothills High School placed at the Science Olympiad State Championship competition; CFSD string teacher was named the Arizona String Teacher Association's Teacher of the Year; Two CFHS students performed with the Tucson Jazz Institute's Concord Combo at the Monterey Jazz Festival's 49th Next Generation Jazz Festival; CFHS senior and graphic design student won the silver medal at the Skills Advertising Design State Championship; Two CFSD Community Schools staff members were award winners in the category of Community Education Office Staff of the Year at the Arizona Community Education Association's annual conference in April; CFHS classical guitarist, was one of 5 instrumental soloists to perform in the opening concert of the 2019 Arizona All-State Honors Festival of Performance at Northern Arizona University; The Orange Grove chess team took 2nd place in the grades K-6 competition at the Arizona Chess Championship; The district poetry contest award winners for this year's competition were announced.
4-9-19 Outstanding Achievements: The CFHS Chess Team finished 11th in national competition in Illinois; Six CFHS athletes were named 4A All-Conference; Community Schools' Outdoors Program was awarded Program of the Year in the state.
3-12-19 Outstanding Achievements: CVES students were winners at the Southern Arizona Research, Science and Engineering Foundation (SARSEF) competition; Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick awarded CFHS freshman teen who discovered Apple's FaceTime glitch, with a Certificate of Congressional Recognition; CFHS freshman on the high school's varsity chess team, traveled to Cuba as a chess ambassador over Winter Break; The CFHS Change of Pace and Women's Silver Choirs competed at the Jazz/Madrigal Festival at NAU; CFHS wrestler took 3rd place at the State Wrestling Tournament; CFHS student performed with the Tucson Philharmonic Youth Orchestra on February 10. He is the first guitar soloist in the 65-year history of the Orchestra; Pioneer 327, the CFHS FIRST Tech Challenge team, went undefeated in the Duel in the Desert in Glendale, Arizona; The CFHS Pomline earned 2nd place at Pink State in Division 1-3 Varsity Jazz; CFHS Senior was one of 26 winners in the Tucson Festival of Books Young Authors contest; The Arizona Interscholastic Association named several CFHS athletes to the 4A Kino All-Region Teams; Three CFHS musical groups performed at the Southeast Region Music Festival; Three CFHS graphic design students competed in the 11th Annual Tucson Area High School Graphic Design Regional Championships; The CFHS DECA team competed in state competition; Several CFHS Speech and Debate team members competed well at the Southwest Speech and Debate Institute Tournament; The CFHS band program placed the largest number of students of any high school in the all-state band; CFHS Coach and son were named Boys Soccer Coach of the Year and Boys Soccer Player of the Year by All Sports Tucson; The CFHS DECA team members earned several awards in state competition; ECMS 6th grader was one of 24 winners in the Tucson Festival of Books Young Artists contest; CFSD Middle School Orchestra received a Superior with Distinction at the Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association's Elementary/Middle School Festival; Several ECMS students were winners at the SARSEF competition; MZES 4th grader was one of 24 winners in the Tucson Festival of Books Young Artists contest; Two MZES Odyssey of the Mind Teams competed in the Southern Regional Odyssey of the Mind Tournament; Several MZES 5th graders were winners at the SARSEF competition; MZES students competed in the South Regional Chess Championships; OGMS 8th grader won several regional awards from the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Alliance for Young Artists & Writers; Several SDES students were winners at the SARSEF competition; VVES 3rd grader was one of 26 winners in the Tucson Festival of Books Young Authors contest; Two VVES Odyssey of the Mind teams competed in the Southern Regional Odyssey of the Mind Tournament; Several VVES students were winners at the SARSEF competition.
2-12-19 Outstanding Achievements: CFHS theatre teacher was named Pima JTED's Satellite Legendary Teacher; CFHS Director of Bands was named the 2018 Music Educator of the Year; Sunrise Drive teacher is a newly renewed National Board Certified (NBC) Teacher; The CFSD Foundation has announced their 2018-2019 Teachers of the Year and Distinguished Educators; The 2019 CFSD top speller is Esperero sixth grader; CFHS theatre students earned Superior ratings at the Southern Arizona Festival of Theatre; CFHS technical theatre students won awards at the SAFT Regional Technical Theatre Challenge event; CFHS's First Tech Challenge (FTC) team, Foothills Pioneer 327, participated in the Queen Creek Qualifying tournament; CFSD middle school team excelled at the Arizona FIRST Lego Championships at Arizona State University; The CFHS Academic Decathlon team competed in regionals last month and will advance to state competition; CFHS Soccer team won the regional championship; Two CFHS students, performed in the All-State Jazz Band on January 31; Several CFHS speech and debate students placed at the Wildcat Cup tournament held at the University of Arizona; Four CFHS students have been selected for the University of Arizona's KEYS Internship Program for summer 2019;
1-8-19 Outstanding Achievements: Esperero Canyon Middle School 8th Grade Band was selected to play at the Arizona Music Educators Conference in Mesa, Arizona; Canyon View 5th graders raised and donated 1,440 books to Literacy Connects; Canyon View SAB partnered with CODAC to donate hundreds of gifts, including books, toys and household items, for Tucson families in need through the Adopt-A-Family program; Manzanita packed and donated 440 food totes to families of a local school; Sunrise Drive CARE students made 30 gingerbread houses for children at TMC; The Ventana Vista Student Council led a toy drive to brighten the holidays for patients at Banner Children’s Hospital. Students in Girls on the Run led a pet food drive. VVES Students also partnered with CODAC to support the Adopt-a-Family program; Esperero's National Junior Honor Society collected paper supplies for the Sister Jose Women's Center pantry. Items were collected as a tribute to Hedwig Dennis, CFSD teacher and wife of Bill Dennis, ECMS teacher. The ECMS Student Council collected items for several organizations...The 6th grade collected diapers and baby toiletries for the Diaper Bank of Southern Arizona. The 7th grade collected for homeless veterans and the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System, including Harkins Theatre gift cards for patients in the Community Living Center. The 8th grade collected clothing and toys for Casa de los Ninos; Orange Grove's Student Council and SAC led a holiday drive for Youth On Their Own; The High School FFO solicited clothing donations to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters. CFHS National Honor Society members donated over 500 hours of work to community service projects during the first semester.
12-11-18 Outstanding Achievements: Five CFSD First Lego League teams will advance to state competition; CFHS sophomore won honorable mention in the Gun Safety Art Competition; CFHS Special Olympians earned medals in recent Special Olympics Bowling competition; CFHS Fall Sports All-Stars have been named; CFHS Boys varsity basketball team won the Dick McConnell Thanksgiving Classic Tournament; CFHS Astronomy Club's Falcon-2 Near Space Probe was successfully launched and recovered on November 14; CFHS Theatre Arts Students won awards at the Technical Challenge;
11-13-18 Outstanding Achievements: Manzanita teacher named Bear Essential News November Teacher of the Month; CFHS Speech & Debate team earned membership into the National
Speech & Debate Association's 100 Club; CFHS Senior had a winning entry in the Economic Concepts Poster Contest; CFHS Boys Cross Country team won first place in Division 1 and 2 at the Titan Invitational in Phoenix; CFHS marching band placed first in each of their two final competitions of the season; CFHS student finished in 2nd Place at the Girls Golf State Championship; CFHS Pomline won first place in Varsity Jazz at the Wild West Classic; CFHS Chess Team won the state championship on November 3; CFHS Girls Swim/Dive Team placed second in state competition; CFHS Boys Swim/Dive Team placed 5th overall in state competition; Catalina Foothills High School, Esperero Canyon Middle School, and Canyon View Elementary School choir students were selected by audition and performed in the American Choral Directors Association State Cantaremos Honor Choirs.
10-9-18 Outstanding Achievements: Two CFSD Governing Board members have earned the Arizona School Boards Association's (ASBA) Associate of Boardsmanship Award; Six CFHS seniors have been named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists; 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSP) commended 12 CFHS students; The National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) recognized 6 CFHS students; CFHS 9th grader was the grand prize winner of the 11th Annual Tucson Birthday Stamp Design Contest; Two CFHS seniors have authored and illustrated the book, India: Faith, Facts, and Festivals; CFHS Girls Cross Country Team took 1st place in the Eye of the Tiger Invitational Tournament; Two CFHS students qualified for the Arizona All State Show Choir; CFHS Freshman was awarded a Ben's Bell for his work to create FreshSole; Sunrise Drive students participated in the academic competition sponsored by the University of Arizona Confucius Institute Chinese Language and Culture Day.
6-12-18 Outstanding Achievements: CFHS English teacher receives Teacher Excellence Award; Ventana Vista Odyssey of the Mind team places 19th at the World Finals.
5-08-18 Outstanding Achievements: Several CFSD students won awards at the Southern Arizona Research, Science and Engineering (SARSEF) Fair 2018; MZES Chess team excelled at the Scholastic State Championships; CFHS Chess Team placed 15th overall in National competition; VVES Odyssey of the Mind team won 2nd place at State and will move onto the World Finals; MZES students who are part of the Tucson Children's Museum OM team, finished 1st place in regional competition and will go to the World Finals; CFHS student, placed as a semifinalist at the 35th Annual National Shakespeare Competition.
4-10-18 Outstanding Achievements: CVES Spelling Bee and Poetry Contest winners; VVES Odyssey of the Mind team won second place in regional competition; OGMS "mathletes" team won the Southern Arizona MATHCOUNTS competition and two students were selected for the All-State Honor Band; CFHS Winterguard came in 1st place at the Mt. View Winterguard Show and CFHS Choir students qualified for the Arizona All State Choir; CFHS Concert Chorale earned "Superior with Distinction"; CFHS DECA team competed at Nationals; CFHS junior, won the Southern Arizona Shakespeare Competition; CFHS Speech & Debate team competed in the state tournament; CFHS student named Region Player of the Year for boys basketball; CFHS student earned First Team All-Region for girls basketball; CFHS's National Signing Day will be April 11; Winners of the CFSD 2018 Poetry Contest announced.
3-13-18 Outstanding Achievements: OGMS sixth grader qualified to compete in 2018 Arizona National Geographic State Bee; ECMS eighth grade basketball team won the state championship; CFHS junior selected for Music for All's 2018 Honor Band of America; CFHS sophomore accepted to National Youth Orchestra of America; CFHS Falcon Band wins Paul Grimes Performance Award; CFHS junior won silver in Math at the Academic Decathlon regional competition; CFHS SkillsUSA Graphics Team took 2nd Place Overall Team Award at the graphic design regional competition; CFHS sophomore took 3rd place in annual Arizona Regional Brain Bee; Two CFHS Girls Soccer team members recognized by the Arizona Interscholastic Association and their coach was named Regional Coach of the Year; CFHS boys soccer player named Regional Offensive Player of the Year; Seventeen CFHS musicians selected to the Arizona All-State Band; Our CFSD Spelling Be winner took second place at the 2018 Pima County Spelling Bee.

12-12-17 Outstanding Achievements: Elementary and Middle School students auditioned and were selected to performed in the American Choral Directors Association State Cantaremos Honor Choirs;
High school coaches and athletes honored for their performance; CFHS Falcons participated in Special Olympics Bowling; Eight CFSD First Lego League teams excel at the First Lego League regional competition.
11-14-17 Outstanding Achievements; CFSD Governing Board members were recently honored for their commitment; Esperero girls cross country team won the Northwest League championship; CFHS student's poster was selected for the cover of the Arizona Council of Economic Education's printed calendar; CFHS's Marching Band was awarded a "Superior" rating; CFHS student placed 2nd at the Division II State Boys Golf Championship; CFHS girls golf team took 5th place at the Division II State Golf Championship; Both the CFHS boys and girls cross country teams finished 6th in state competition; Both the CFHS girls and boys swim and dive teams finished in 2nd place in state competition; CFHS student won first place in both 200 and 500 freestyle.
