Chromebook Checkout

Due to the extended school closure, Remote Learning Days will begin in CFSD on April 6, 2020. Remote (online) learning will continue as long as the schools remain closed. 

We want to ensure that your student(s) has access to a device to participate in remote learning with his/her teachers using Google Classroom.

If your CFSD student does not have an electronic device available at home for the upcoming remote learning days, please fill out the form at the link below to reserve one at your student's school of attendance. 

Note: If more than one student will need a Chromebook, please fill out the form for each student.

We want to ensure that we have enough Chromebooks for students who do not have access to a device, so we respectfully request that you limit your requests to what is essential for participation in remote learning.
 

Distribution Dates and Locations

Chromebooks that have been reserved using the checkout form above may be picked up at your child's school on  April 1 and April 2, 2020. 

Note: If you reserve more than one Chromebook and your students attend different schools in CFSD, please pick up the reserved Chromebooks at the school with the highest grade level. For example, if you have an elementary and middle school student, please pick up the Chromebooks for both students at the middle school your student attends.

Chromebooks can be picked up on the following dates and times:

Wednesday, April 1 between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

Thursday, April 2 between 3:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

A parent/guardian will be requested to present picture ID and the student's CFSD school-issued ID number before receiving the Chromebook. If you don't know your student's ID number, you can log in to your ParentVUE account and click on the "Student Info" tab on the left side of the screen. The Student ID can be found in the "Perm ID" field. If you do not have a ParentVUE account, or if you’ve forgotten your password and are unable to recover it, please contact your student’s school for assistance.


Frequently Asked Questions on Chromebook Distribution

Question: I missed the scheduled mass distribution of Chromebooks, but still need one for my student. Is it still possible to get one?

Answer: Yes, you can still check out a Chromebook for your student. Please fill out the request form here so we can track requests, and then you can contact the school to arrange a mutually convenient time to pick it up.

 

Question: What is required to check out a Chromebook?

Answer: Parents/guardians will need to bring a picture ID and sign an equipment checkout form. The district needs to track the distribution of Chromebooks and account for damage or loss. Students need to use the district-loaned device with care as families are responsible for damage or loss.

 

Question: I already have a computer or tablet that my student can use. Do I have to use a Chromebook?

Answer: No you don’t. CFSD is providing Chromebooks to students without a computer or tablet so that they have a device to use for Remote Learning Days. If you already have a personal device that will work, please have your child use it.

 

Question: What devices can I use to connect to Google Classroom and Google Hangouts Meet?

Answer: Any computer that runs the following operating systems:

  • Apple macOS
  • Microsoft Windows
  • Google ChromeOS
  • Ubuntu and other Debian-based Linux® distribution

In addition, you need to use the latest version of one of these web browsers: Chrome Browser, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Apple Safari. For more specific information on Google Classroom see here; for Google Hangouts Meet see here. Please have your students contact their teachers if they have questions about classwork or using Google Classroom or Hangouts Meet.

 

Question: Does my device need a keyboard?

Answer: iPads, Kindle Fires, and other tablet devices – including some versions of Chromebooks – do not come with an actual keyboard. Instead, they provide a "soft" keyboard where the user types directly on the screen. If your student is comfortable typing on the screen of their tablet then an external keyboard won't be needed. If students anticipate needing to do a lot of writing, an external keyboard that can be used with the device will help to minimize fatigue. Note: depending on the device, it may be possible to use the device's built-in speech recognition to dictate the bulk of the text into Google Docs or Word, and then go back and clean up any errors with the soft keyboard. Please consult your device's manufacturer for details.

 

Question: What about my iPad or Android tablet?

Answer: These are supported through downloadable apps. Links to the app stores can be found here for Hangouts Meet, and here for Classroom.

 

Question: What other requirements are there?

Answer: You must have a broadband connection to the internet.

 

Question: Do I need a camera or microphone? How about speakers?

Answer: A camera is not needed to use Google Classroom. A microphone, built-in web camera, or external USB camera are nice to have, but not required. If you don’t have speakers on your computer your student can phone in to a “live” meeting using the phone number provided in the meeting invitation. Teachers will inform students and parents in advance if they plan to use a “live” meeting.

 

Question: Can I use Xbox or Playstation 4 with Google Classsroom?

Answer: Yes. There isn't an app that the students can add to their consoles. Instead, they are going to have to use the built-in browsers that come on the two devices. Your students will probably know how to find the browsers on their consoles, but if not, each one has a search function they can access on the home screen. Once the browser has been opened: (1) Type in classroom.google.com in the URL bar. (2) A prompt for a Google account will appear. (3) Type in your school district email and password - it doesn't end in google.com and that is ok! (4) The Classroom home screen will open up.

 

Question: I don’t know my student’s ID number. How can I find this?

Answer: To find your student’s ID number log in to your ParentVUE account and click on the "Student Info" tab on the left side of the screen. The student ID can be found near the top in the "Perm ID" field. The seven-digit number there that begins with "9 is the student ID number. Click here for for directions. If you do not have a ParentVUE account, or if you’ve forgotten your password and are unable to recover it, please contact your student’s school for assistance.

 

Question: Where can I get the username and password that will let my child log in to their Chromebook, Google Classroom, Google Drive, etc.?

Answer: The username is the child’s school email address, and the password is their Google password. This information is also in ParentVUE on the "Student Info" tab. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and you’ll find the School Email field and Google Password field. Click here for directions.

 

Question: Will classes be live or uploaded?

Answer: Delivery of content will vary by teacher and/or course. Teachers will communicate how they will deliver instruction when they launch Google Classroom, realizing that learning structures at home will vary with families.

 

Question: What if I have technical issues?

Answer: We can only provide technical support for CFSD-provided Chromebooks. Please note that the CFSD IT department or school-based computer technicians will not be able to assist with personal devices or setting up or troubleshooting Wi-Fi issues. You will need to contact your Internet service provider for Wi-Fi support.

If you need support for a Chromebookthat that you checked out from the district, you can email the computer technician for your student’s school beginning Thursday, April 2, 2020.
