Navigating remote (virtual) learning

The transition to remote learning began on April 6, 2020 for all Catalina Foothills School District (CFSD) students. Remote learning will continue for the remainder of this school year in response to the March 30 announcement from Governor Ducey and Superintendent Hoffman that all Arizona schools will be closed through the end of the 2019-2020 school year. 

Remote learning cannot replicate the day-to-day educational experiences that occur in classrooms. Therefore, our teachers are hard at work adapting and creating lessons to provide students with meaningful and productive learning experiences. The shift from face-to-face instruction to remote learning requires our teachers to rethink how they will deliver instruction, assess student work, and maintain connections with students. 

We also recognize the stress that many of our families are under at this time and that monitoring a remote learning program puts an additional responsibility on families. Thank you for working with us to support your child's continued learning.

Experience from schools and the educational community around the world who have been providing online learning in this extraordinary context helped to inform our plan for remote learning. For more detailed information about remote learning in CFSD, please read Remote Learning: Information and Guidelines for Families (updated on April 8, 2020 to include grading expectations and video conferencing etiquette for students).

Learning platform

Google Classroom is being used as the common platform across grades K-12 to engage remotely with students about learning. Teachers will direct lessons and provide instructional support via Google Classroom. To view lessons and assignments, please see your child's Google Classroom(s).

Teachers will focus instruction on the most essential content and skills using a variety of formats and approaches. Instructional methods may vary with teachers and/or by course/subject area. Teachers are working closely with their principals and other teachers to support the learning of students, provide a balanced and meaningful workload, and maximize flexibility across teacher teams.

Students will not be following their daily class schedule to participate in learning. We recognize that students may need to share devices with siblings or parents who are working at home, resulting in varied and/or limited schedules for learning. Try to maintain a consistent routine and schedule, set realistic goals, balance screen time, allow time for interacting virtually with friends, and schedule time for fun. Please check in with your child's teacher(s) if you have concerns or need support.

Expectations for video conferencing

The use of video conferencing provides a venue for connecting with each other, learning together, and creating a sense of community. The virtual space should be welcoming and safe for all students, and be treated in the same respectful manner we expect in the regular classroom. Students should not share their username, password, and conferencing links with others. To assist students and families with the transition to Google Classroom for remote learning, please use the school-based email contacts below for support. This support is only for Google Classroom and related functions. It is not tech support for personal devices or Internet services provided at home.

Communicating with students and parents/guardians

Teachers will communicate the details of their learning plan and expectations for students, recognizing the challenges of the current situation. They will maintain regular communication about lessons and assignments, and will be available for questions/support during their designated working hours and office hours. If you have questions about lessons and/or assignments, please contact your child's teacher(s) using email as your primary method of contact.

School counselors continue to be available during the school closure and can also be reached directly by email for support and advice, as needed.

Grading expectations

Third quarter (6-12) and second trimester (K-5) grades will be used as the baseline for final grades with a focus on maintaining or improving grades. Students are expected to meet the instructional requirements of their teachers and submit assignments/classwork per their directions. Teachers will provide feedback to students and post grades in the grade book. If you have questions or concerns about specific lessons or assignments, or if your child is sick or can't participate in remote learning, please contact your child's teacher(s).

Special services

Special services teachers and staff are also providing instruction to support your child's education. They are focusing their support on Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals through scheduled appointments and/or Google Classoom.

Using guidance from the U.S. and Arizona Departments of Education, CFSD will continue to provide a free and appropriate public education working within current government recommendations for health and safety, to the greatest extent possible. Special education regulations allow for flexibility in determining how to meet the individual needs of students with disabilities considering the current national emergency.

Device distribution

After surveying families about access to devices, we distributed Chromebooks on April 1 and April 2, 2020. If you find that you still need to check out a Chromebook, please see the "Chromebook Checkout & Distribution" link in the menu at the top of the page.

Working together to support students

We know that remote learning presents a steep learning curve for staff, students, and families. This new experience of teaching and learning will require all of us to be flexible and patient and to adjust schedules and routines, as needed. Please don't hesitate to contact your child's teacher(s) and/or principal if you want to share feedback about your experience. We want our students to feel connected to their teacher(s) and classmates, and engage in their studies to advance their learning. We appreciate all of the support you have shown us during this extraordinary circumstance.
