The minimum proficiency requirements for certain languages are different for both the Silver and Gold levels of distinction. This relates to each language's "linguistic distance" from English. Spanish, for example, is a language that is closely related to English and as such, it typically takes less time for a native English-speaker to acquire as compared to a linguistically distant language such as Mandarin Chinese. Minimum proficiency requirements are adjusted to account for these differences.
