FIRST Lego League
FIRST Lego League is an annual competition in robotics with events at the regional, state, national and international levels. Students aged 9-14 in the 4th-9th grades may participate. The 14-week season runs from September 3rd-December 12th. During this time teams of 7 to 10 students meet weekly, and more often as necessary, to design, build and program a robot to accomplish a set of challenging missions. They also complete a research mission, which involves contacting experts and developing an original solution to a real world problem. The robotics and research missions take focus, teamwork, and task commitment. The season is demanding and fun for students who are guaranteed to gain new skills and friendships.
This year the FLL teams will try to improve our quality of life by exploring the cutting-edge world of Biomedical Engineering to discover innovative ways to repair injuries, overcome genetic predispositions, and maximize the body’s potential, with the intended purpose of leading happier and healthier lives.
Charlotte Ackerman, Gifted Specialist at Sunrise Drive and Manzanita Schools, is assisted by William Wight, teacher at Sunrise Drive School, and a team of volunteers from the community. Parents are encouraged to commit time to supporting team efforts.
To be eligible to participate on a FLL team, students must sign up for a two-session Pre-season class. This class introduces potential team members to the activities involved in FLL competition and allows them and the coaches to assess their readiness for the commitment required. Students selected for teams will continue to meet weekly.
Fee: $25 for Pre-Season class payable with registration on August 20, 2010. (Fee for the 14-week FLL season, for students
selected for teams, will be $215, payable by the first day of team meetings.)
